Miguel Angel Jimenez shot a 10-under 61 to take a three-stroke halfway lead Friday in the European Masters. The 46-year-old Spaniard had two eagles to produce the lowest score of his 28-year professional career in the build-up to his fourth Ryder Cup appearance at Celtic Manor next month. It also lowered the course record from the 62 shot by Eduardo Romero in 2000.

John Elway pulled an Elway on the Elway hole. “Seven on 7,” the Hall of Famer said sadly after carding an even-par 72 Wednesday in his first senior golf tournament since turning 50 in June. Elway’s blunder came about when he played the wrong ball and ended up with a triple bogey on the par-4 seventh hole at the Green Valley Ranch Golf Club, site of the HealthOne Colorado Senior Open.

It’s a great thing when an NFL organization reaches out and gets children involved in the game, and it’s also a great thing when a young player is bursting with enthusiasm to strap on the pads and play for his team.But sometimes, it’s not such a great thing when those two things come together. Head on a swivel, kid!Oh, that was unfortunate. Delmas’ enthusiasm inadvertently had children falling down like bowling pins. The good news is that no one was injured, and of course, Delmas was very sorry. I felt bad,” Delmas said.Well, no harm, no foul. The kids, resilient little creatures that they are, have a story to tell. Let’s all just hope that this makes everyone a little more aware, because the damage could have been considerable if this were someone like Ndamukong Suh.

The New England Patriots lost a key player Tuesday when Leigh Bodden, their best cornerback, was placed on injured reserve. Bodden, who led the Patriots with five interceptions last season, went on the season-ending list with a shoulder injury. He had been bothered by a knee injury earlier in training camp and returned to practice last week.

Devils submit new Kovalchuk contract (AP)
NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly says the New Jersey Devils have submitted a new contract to the league for Russian star Ilya Kovalchuk. The league has five days to approve or reject the deal, which media reports say amounts to $100 million over 15 years. A month ago, the NHL rejected a 17-year, $102 million contract for Kovalchuk, saying it violated the league salary cap.

Once again, the Seattle Storm were were just too much for the Los Angeles Sparks. Lauren Jackson had 24 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and three steals as the Storm beat the Sparks 81-66 Saturday to sweep their best-of-three Wetern Conference semifinals series. “Lauren makes that big of an impact,” Seattle coach Brian Agler said.

Stars’ Grossman gets 2-year, $3.25M deal (AP)
The Dallas Stars have agreed to terms with defenseman Nicklas Grossman on a two-year contract worth $3.25 million. The 25-year-old Grossman skated in 71 games for the Stars last season, finishing with seven assists and 32 penalty minutes. In 2008-09, he had career highs in goals (two), assists (10) and points (12).

SMU extends coach Jones through 2014 (AP)
SMU coach June Jones has signed a two-year contract extension that would keep him at the school through the 2014 season. After going 1-11 in his first season, SMU improved to 8-5 last year and went to the Hawaii Bowl to end a 25-year bowl drought. The Mustangs’ seven-win improvement was the largest for any team in Division I college football last season.

Michelle Wie’s second round didn’t have the wow factor of a hole-in-one, but a 3-under 69 on Friday was enough to keep her atop the leaderboard halfway through the Canadian Women’s Open. The Hawaii native posted a two-round total of 10-under 134, three strokes ahead of Jiyai Shin of South Korea, who had a second-round 67.
